If you hear a voice teacher say, "breathe from the diaphragm", leave, get your money back, they do not know what they are talking about. At all. The diaphragm is a passive organ meaning it only moves because it has too it doesn't actually do anything to move it just does. It lowers in order to create more room for your lungs!

BREATHING IS THE POWER SOURCE OF SINGING. What that's so important let me say it again. Breathing is the power source of singing!!!!!! Take my student Sarah for example. When we first started she had a beautiful tone, strong sound but no vibrato, a weak head voice and no control. We started working with humming into a straw in a glass of water. This creates back pressure in the vocal folds and allows more closer. This creates more EFFICIENT use of the breath. Soon her voice has beautiful vibrato, she felt more ease in her belt and her high notes were stunning!!!!

Sometimes it's not about using all the air in our lungs at once to hit a high note. No no no the nerd singing group knows we use just enough air to hit the note. Sometimes if a student is over using air (yep it happens) I will have them blow out all the air they can then begin to sing a phrase. Most of the time they can do it! It not about quantity its about quality use!!! Speaking of quality. Are you looking for a voice teacher in Bethesda, Maryland? Or Online? Or are you looking for in home voices lessons in the DMV?
